Carl Hiaasen Book Covers

Penguin Random House

We were approached by Penguin Random House to help them redesign the covers of a series of young adult novels by New York Bestselling author, Carl Hiaasen. They felt the previous cover versions were a bit too dated and young for the audience. Though our initial role was to do both the design and the illustration work, they eventually opted to take the design in-house. But even though our work went through some revisions, by request of the client, we are happy to have been able to do our part by providing them with fun, colorful illustrations that now resonate better with an older audience.

OUR ROLE:

Our Solution

Due to the legacy of success of Hiaasen’s novels in this series over many years, we advocated for not straying too far from the previous designs. That meant preserving the bold, but limited number of colors and highlighting an animal from each story. And even though we kept the title font clean and simple, we loved the idea of having the animals interacting with them in clever ways.

Our solution to aging up the illustrations was adding a bit more detail to the animals, along with incorporating textures. And even though the end cover design wasn’t ours, the illustrations looked great with the playful lettering and black background.
